PA Budget Hearings Conclude - 2021

Department of Human Services

On Wednesday, we met with officials from the Department of Human Services for a two-part budget hearing focused on health and human services programs as well as budget cost requests. During our exchange, the secretary made a concerning statement – that in order to receive federal dollars, we must keep Pennsylvanians on state government programs. I expressed my strong concerns about this statement in the video below.

We need to help people in times of need and help them move forward. Government agencies shouldn’t be working to keep people reliant on government. Instead, our government programs should be helping and building independence and strength in people. Individuals are happier and healthier when they are achieving – there is science behind this!

Department of Education On Monday, our committee questioned officials with the state Department of Education about providing a plan for vaccinating teachers, implementing clear guidelines and returning our children to the classroom. When other states have achieved this, I questioned why Pennsylvania can’t get this done and how important it is to get our kids back to in-person school as soon as possible! You can view my full comments in the video below!

Our kids need to get back to school for their education, mental health, social skills and overall productivity.

Department of Labor and Industry On Tuesday, we had a two-part budget hearing with the PA Department of Labor and Industry’s Acting Secretary Jennifer Berrier. You can view my comments by clicking the video below!

For nearly a year now, my district office has fielded an extremely high volume of constituent concerns related to unemployment compensation.

Please know, your worries, concerns and frustrations are heard. I hope you feel confident my staff and I are working tirelessly to get you answers and much-needed responses as we, too, navigate this challenging process with limited resources.

I do want to thank the Department of Labor and Industry for its improved communication mechanisms with the legislative offices over the recent weeks, however, improvements must continue to promptly pay out every eligible claim.

All budget hearings are available for viewing here.

  • "I think one of the things that really separates us from the high primates is that we’re tool builders. I read a study that measured the efficiency of locomotion for various species on the planet. The condor used the least energy to move a kilometer. And, humans came in with a rather unimpressive showing, about a third of the way down the list. It was not too proud a showing for the crown of creation. So, that didn’t look so good. But, then somebody at Scientific American had the insight to test the efficiency of locomotion for a man on a bicycle. And, a man on a bicycle, a human on a bicycle, blew the condor away, completely off the top of the charts.

And that’s what a computer is to me. What a computer is to me is it’s the most remarkable tool that we’ve ever come up with, and it’s the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds.”
